So yesterday saw the first advent calendar whisky I’d not tried before, and today contained the first whisky I’d not even heard of before!
Actually make that whiskey. The sample bottle says “Pikesville straight rye” and I had to do a little research, but it turns out that this is distilled at heaven hill distillery and is 4 years old.
I’m nowhere near as experienced with American whiskey as I am with scotch, but I like to try new things, and this is something I never would have tried if not for the advent calendar. Here are the dramstats:
- Price ~£21.50
- ABV 40%
Nose: Big vanilla, dark soft muscavado sugar, star anise, aniseed balls, spearmint, rye bread, cinnamon.
Palate: Soft muscavado followed by vanilla and then aniseed and cinnamon. It has a soft mouthfeel, with no big arrival. Very gentle.
Finish: Wave of aniseed and vanilla, cool spearmint and drying oak.
Verdict: It’s nice but it’s not my type of whisky, so I don’t think I’d buy it. It is a bargain though, and I could see my enjoying this when the mood takes me. I just don’t expect that would be very often.
I wonder if I’ll have tried or even heard of tomorrows whisky before…
